Betta Splendens, Siamese fighting fish

The Siamese fighting fish (Betta splendens) is a freshwater fish native to Southeast Asia.

Betta fish were first domesticated in Thailand at least 1,000 years ago. They were bred to participate in gambling matches, which gave them the adjective of “fighting fish”.

Now they are globally popular as a pet, and among the most popular aquarium fish in the world, due to their diverse and colorful morphology.
